This week we have been exploring money. We have looked at different coins and sorted them into groups. We named the coins and used words such as bronze, silver, round and big or small to describe them. We enjoyed playing shop and used the coins to buy different toys. The children have sorted coins into the piggy bank and they used magnets to sort real and pretend coins in our water area.

Let us know if you have fun sorting coins together at home!

The children have been busy exploring the different challenges. They have worked together to transport building blocks and build towers. They have travelled through tunnels and over obstacles to score goals. Our challenges will change next week but I know the children will show the same determination and perseverance when they face our new tasks.

On Monday the children told each other about their exciting Bonfire Night experiences. We celebrated Bonfire Night by creating our own firework dances whilst listening to Handel’s ‘Music for the Royal Fireworks’. The children have spent the week making firework pictures using paint, chalks, crayons and glitter. They have also used computer programs to make colourful Bonfire Night pictures. We explored the ‘Big Bus’ program together and the children created their own firework displays and composed their own music to accompany them!

We have been busy making our own magic potions this week. We made a bubbling wizard’s brew and watched as our magic potion bubbled over the pot. We also made raisins dance as the bubbles lifted them to the top of the liquid and then let the raisins fall back down again once the bubbles popped. Information about the two experiments can be found at

We have talked about circles, squares, rectangles, triangles, pentagons, hexagons and octagons and we have talked about the number of sides and corners each shape has. We watched the seven dwarves digging for diamonds and we have helped them to find treasure as we were digging for shapes in our hobbit hole! The children have also explored school searching for the different shapes that they could find. Let us know what shapes you can find together at home!

All of the children shared the resources and helped each other. Paul and Stewart will be returning each Wednesday for the next six weeks, we’re excited to see what activities we will finding in the hall next week!

Today we have started to think about our new topic ‘Will you tell me a story?’ Lots of the children had brought fairytale books into school and we read George’s book as ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs’ is the fairytale we will be thinking about this week. We watched a video of the wicked queen making potions to transform herself into an old woman and to make the poisoned apple for Snow White. The children have been busy making their own potions and casting their own spells in class! Lots of fairytale characters have appeared in our ‘Fairytale Forest’ too!

Our new topic after half term will be ‘Will you tell me a story?’ We have been talking about our favourite stories together in class. The children have decided to change our role play area into a fairytale forest where we can pretend to be our favourite characters and create new stories together. In preparation for the topic, please share your child’s favourite traditional tales and talk about their favourite characters.

All of the children have had a wonderful first term in school. We are very proud of the way that they have all settled into school and made new friends. We hope that you all have a lovely half term break, see you all in a week for more fun in class!
